How to Get a Medical Cannabis Card in Puerto Rico?

In order to get a medical cannabis card in Puerto Rico there are a few simple steps to follow. Listed below is a step-by-step guide for helping prospective medical cannabis patients get a medical marijuana card in Puerto Rico.

Step 1: Do you qualify?

To get a medical cannabis card in Puerto Rico you must meet these qualifying conditions:

  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
  • MS (Multiple sclerosis)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Parkinson
  • Anorexia
  • Hepatitis C
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Agitation of Alzheimer’s disease
  • A chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or the treatment for a chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition that causes:
  • Severe and chronic pain (e.g. arthritis, migraines, etc);
  • Severe nausea;
  • Seizures, including those characteristic of epilepsy;
  • Severe or persistent muscle spasms, including those characteristic of multiple sclerosis

Step 2: Find a medical cannabis doctor

Choose a medical marijuana doctor in Puerto Rico, then contact and schedule an appointment with the doctor to authorize the use of medical cannabis. You can also visit islandmedpr.com.

Step 3: Submit your application for a medical cannabis card

Fill-in all parts of the application, attach your doctor’s certification and proof of identity (a copy of a Puerto Rico driver’s license or valid Puerto Rico government ID). The application should be notarized and a $25 fee is required.

*If the patient is not able to get the treatment by himself, you can authorized a companion. Patients can have an authorized companion if their conditions  affects their mobility. Step 4: Receive your card

If your application is approved, the Puerto Rico Health Department will send you a Patient’s Card which will have to be renewed every year.
